Security tips for going away on holiday
Should you be thinking of taking off on a holiday, Chubb Security South Africa has the following tips on how to make your home that much more secure before you leave on that well deserved break.
* Homeowners should avoid fitting the two-, three- and four-lever locks on the external doors - rather use cylinder locks or cylinder deadlocks or locks of the five- or six-lever type.
* Consider using temporary lock blocks for doors with lever-type locks to prevent would-be intruders from gaining access by using commonly available numbered keys.
* Fit suitable ’spacers’, locks or bolts to all sliding doors to prevent them from being lifted off their tracks. This is the most common method used by burglars who break in through sliding doors and windows.
* Ensure all windows are fitted with adequate locks and catches and burglar bars cover all the glass area.
* Additional security should be fitted if your windows can be forced open easily.
* For added security, fit a wrought-iron gate or an expanding grille gate at the front door and any glass door that cannot be burglar-barred.
* Ensure all duplicate keys are locked away if not in use. Do not leave keys in doors or make unnecessary copies.
* Install a safe for weapons and valuables. Duplicate house keys could be kept in this safe. Please note that wall safes are usually not fireproof and are therefore not suitable for face-value documents and money.
The following couple of tips may give you that extra peace of mind, even if you are not planning on going away:
* Fit a wrought-iron gate, or an expanding grille gate, to separate the bedroom wing as a ’safe area’ into which your family can retreat at night or in case of an emergency.
* Consider fitting a lock or barrel bolt to your bedroom door to ensure you are not ’surprised’ when you are asleep.
* If you have all of these in place or do not have the time to acquire thes safety measures please test all panic buttons in your home to see if they are working,Also in my opinion your security company is charging you for your piece of mind, wouldnt it be fair to ensure they are there when you need them, give them a test, trip your alarm and test how long the take in order to come out to you(not call you to see if you okay,a physical representation)
NB: Look out for our soon to come security company test, where we will put security companies to the test in order to provide you with the best provider.
Although we like to think of our home as being safe, one should always stay one step ahead of the criminal element. One can never be too careful.
Travel safely if you are going away!

Security should be one of our main concerns nowadays since burglary is getting rampant and more advanced each day. It is better to be safe than sorry.
