Students being terrorised at Lenasia South school

A Grade 11 pupil feels unsafe at her school after she and her three friends were attacked by thugs.
Aneesah Latib, 17, a pupil at Azara Secondary School in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, was attacked by three criminals on the school grounds on Wednesday just before assembly.
Other pupils were mugged at least two hours later at the same school.
“It was just before assembly and I saw three guys approaching my two friends. They asked them for their cellphones and they only got one.
“When they saw me and Nazmeera, they came towards us and wanted to search us. I opened my school blazer and showed them that I did not have anything on me. We both did not have cellphones. They did not look into our schoolbags.
“They then told us that they would come back during first or second break and when they did they won’t be alone.”
“I don’t feel safe coming to school anymore,” Latib said yesterday.
And it seems her fellow pupils share her sentiments. Of the 1141 pupils at the school only about 423 were at school.
In the second incident, two people dressed in school uniforms mugged a pupil and fled with his cellphone. Teachers gave chase but they could not catch up with them.
School principal Noody Maharaj said: “We always have problems with people coming into the premises and robbing teachers and learners. Two weeks ago, a learner was stabbed on his hand for his cellphone. This year alone we have had over five incidents of crime at the school.
“I have written to the education department about this but they do not do anything. I only receive letters of acknowledgement.”
Maharaj said that the education department had promised to build the school a wall but they never delivered on that.
